March, April and May

These months I have been concentrating on my Community and Service. As a leader of cleft lip and palette, we have organized a party to raise money for operations, as well as planned a trip to the hospital to play and interact with the kids. It is important to help these children that have cleft lip and palette as they really need the surgery to go on with everyday life. here is a diagram showing a little child with a cleft palette.

With the money that we raised (24,000 Sri Lankan Rupees) will go to the account, with other activities to be given to the hospital at the end of the next school year.

The Party (aloha)

We organized a party that was going to help to raise money for the surgerys, here are the poster covers for the party:

There has been little sports and creativity over the past months due to school work and exams.

Music Concert

So as a band, we are planning on entering a "contest/concert" here in Sri Lanka were we have to compete against other bands. To make sure that we get into the tournament, we first have to make sure we make it through the opening pat of the concert, which is the auditions. To make it through these we are planning on playing "When September Ends" by Green Day. Then if we make it to the later rounds, we will play:

  1. The Hell Song -- Sum 41
  2. I'd Do Anything -- Simple Plan
  3. Fade to Black -- Metallica
  4. One Last Breath -- Creed

This activity would connect to the CAS activities because we show increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth, undertaken new challenges, planned and initiated activities, worked collaboratively with others, shown perseverance and commitment in their activities and develop new skills. This feels very good because this process of learning and playing in this concert really connects to the criteria in the CAS blogging.

Hopefully we will make it through. Wish us luck!!! :)

January - February

Creativity:

I have kept working hard on my bass skills and have developed into a sufficient player to play with the band. As of the beginning of January, Bharat, Skylord, Davide' and myself have been working hard to get together to have a few band practices in the Music room above the auditorium. It has been a very productive two months in that sense. The only person that is still to come is a drummer, which is hard to find because there is almost no one in this school who is a drummer or is willing to give up their time to come after school. These practices really developed Working collaboratively with others and Developing new skills.

Badminton:

Every week, on Mondays, Teru and me plan and organize a Badminton activity for the younger children in our school. So we teach them the basic skills on how to serve, smash and placement on the court. They have developed skills and are really starting to enjoy the sport. This helps Planned and initiated activities and increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth.

Going back to the initial goals, they were;
  • To help the students develop their badminton skills (if they want to learn, that is)
  • To develop my badminton skills while also teaching the students
  • To develop a leadership
  • To further develop my teaching of badminton (this is the area for growth)
  • To plan and initiate what we’ll do every week
  • To work collaboratively with Teru, Ms. Lockwood and everybody else
  • To show perseverance and commitment in this activity.
As we went through this block, teaching the younger kids, we learnt new skills and managed to teach them the very basic skills in badminton. What they were interested in was to learn the basics so that they could play their own games with their friends and not really learn to play the sport for real.

Also, as an extra activity, I travelled with the OSC badminton team to go up against the British school in a tournement. Overall, we all did well, but we did loose our combined match (Kobena and Myself).

SAISA BOYS FOOTBALL:

This has been a very hard two months of training to prepair ourselves and the team as a whole to compete in the SAISA tournament in Dhaka. As the season progressed, we reached some difficulties due to a number of students not behaving as they should have been. So due to that, we left with 12 players to Dhaka. While we where in Dhaka, we worked very hard and won our first two games in the pool games. When we met AES in the 3rd game, there was another unfortunate event where I  got a neck injury from a rough tackle from the goalkeeper. They took me to the hospital o make sure that I didn't have any serious neck injuries. I had to stay at the hospital that night and was allowed to leave around 12 the next day. With only 11 players and no substitutes, we were not able to perform at our top level. With me out of the team, the boys worked very hard to get to the position we were supposed to get, but we got 2nd place in sportsmanship, so at least we worked hard, and cheered the other teams on. Our collaboration, personal excellence, undertaken new challenges and perseverance to the activity really developed during this tournament and we got to meet new people and expand out knowledge about people.

Track and Field:

As soon as we came back from Dhaka, we started with the intense training for the competition in Dehli. We are being  trained by Davide's father, Mr. Gresham who has been training us all of February so that we have a chance against the huge competition in Dehli. This season is so short that we only have 6 weeks and therefore need to work a lot harder to develop into fit athletes. This training develops Worked collaboratively with others in the relay teams, Undertaken new challenges which would be trying out long jump and shot put which I have never tried before.

Practice, with intense stretching

November - December

Action:

SAISA GILRS FOOTBALL: This month I have further helped to advance through the girls SAISA training and also was one of the 5 guys that organized the disco, the final ceremony and also some of the activities during the day. This is the team of girls that Karl, Bharat and me trained (no one else, they are lying), and with the help of our incredible skill they now play like pros. :)

SAISA BOYS FOOTBALL: This month we started our training for the SAISA tournament in Dhaka. For the first weeks we mostly trained on our fitness and ran most of the hours on the field. By the end of the month we started with skill and other training types.

Service:

DAWG: At the end of December, we finished our final sterilization and vacination, which went very well and we had quite a large number of people come in with dogs. Our presentation was supposed to be presented tot the assembly but due to certain techniqual difficulties, we were not able to do it before the christmas holidays.

Cleft Palate: For next term, I will join cleft palate as a co-leader with Bharat. This will be good because then I can really affect how our school participates with the children and service. I was planning on running for treasurer in the Key Club to make sure that I can really help the schools service programs.

Creativity:

Even though i said before that I was starting the guitar, there were multiple questions if I wanted to join a "band" so because they already had 2 guitars, I chose to start learning bass instead. This seemed like an easier option considering my big fingers didn't really work out with the small strings. But with these one, i can play pretty well and learning fast.

September - October

Creativity:

Guitar:

Bharat Khosla taught me how to play the basic chords and slow struming on an acoustic guitar. We have been constantly practicing the struming and it is getting exstremly exciting! I didn't do the afterschool activity because I couldn't go on the days that they were running it as well as I dont own a guitar myself. He has taught me the G, A, D, C, F. I was really proud of myself and I will keep practicing and excel.

UN day:

During the UN day I was the main carrier of the flag and leader of the Swedish group. We really supported our country and waved a lot. It was very nice with the different types of food and even though we didn't have that many people, we supported our country well!

Community:

DAWG:

I have gone every week for DAWG and I was there as major support when we had the movie night. The movie that we watched was "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs" and the smaller kids as well as the adults really enjoyed it.

American Halloween Festival Help:

During the halloween weekend, we went to the American Embassy and helped to make the Scary House work. Bharat, Skylord and me acted as some of the scary creatures. I was first the scary clown that hide in the last room for the small kids and then I switched with Sascha for the bigger kids and was the vampire that popped out of the coffin when the people walked by!

Action:

SAISA Girl Football:

During this month I helped to teach the girls SAISA team with skills and ball control.

Referee'd Middle School Football:

Over this past weekend (28th to 30th October) I helped to referee a middle school match between OSC Gecko's and CIS. The OSC Gecko's won 4 - 2 with hard competition from the opposing team.

1. Swimming

PLAN:

For this upcoming SAISA I will work really hard to keep up a  consistant effort and try my best throughout the competition. I will aim to get at least a 3rd place in all my races and I will support my team to the best of my ability to help us win.

RESULTS:

Over the 23rd to the 27th of September I participated in the SAISA Swimming competition that was held in Bombay. I beat most of my personal bests and had real success overall in the tournament. I would say this is a great event to put as part of my Action area.
The swimming was hard because the competition was just as good as I was and some even better so that created a personal challenge for me.
I participated in 50m, 100m and 200m freestyle, 50 fly as well as 200 IM.
Came 2nd in 50m and 100m free.
Came 3rd in 50m fly and 200m freestyle.

So overall this was a great competition and I enjoyed it very much :)
